Well, it looks like LiveJournal has gone the ad supported route. This is sad for me because I have been with LiveJournal for quite some time and now have to leave it as I do NOT want readers of this blog to believe that I am endorsing products that I may be opposed to. The only way to not display the ads is to pay. Now I don't blame anyone for trying to make a buck or two I just can't afford another yearly IT related fee at this time. I've already canceled Comcast and my land line (opting for what is called a "Dry Loop" DSL line. So my bill went from over $90.00 a month to around $44.00 with taxes and fees. That's not chump change, guys!) So, good by LiveJournal! You can read the new blog, hosted for now at Blogger by clicking HERE.

Live Journal has now started an ad supported service. Please note that I, Kevin Keyser, do not endorse or promote any of the ads shown on the blog. Please bear with me as I figure out what to do next. I'm looking at the blog software included with my hosting package. I would hate to leave Live Journal since I have been with them so long but I do NOT want readers of this blog to believe that I am endorsing products that I may be opposed to.
It's late and I REALLY need to get to sleep….

I finished the first draft to Awakings tonight. Now comes time for a rewrite and general clean up. Wow, two years later! Writing is fun! ;-)
Say, can anyone help with the editing part? ;-)

I'm not dead! Things have been very busy of late. I've actually knocked more of "Awakings" out. Currently I'm stuck on one of the parts that requires me to be VERY correct. So I'm taking my time with it.
That's really all to say right now. Stay tuned! ;-)

Spoiler alert! I'm writing key dialog now. It's very emotional because the pages I am doing now are the defining words to a 30 year mythos. To listen to Taslasness as he describes the Triad and everything else from the original audio play is absolutely wonderful:
"You called this the River of Life?"
Taslasness shook his head:
"You stand on the banks of the River of Life. This is the one river that joins all humanity together. Connected together through song, ideas, creativity, worship, love and everything in between.
The river is more. It supplies water for the great tree, it's roots which form the fabric of space time and everything that was, is, will be."
Kaswan turned pale:
"How? How does it do these things?"
"Have you ever heard of a man named Albert Einstein?"

A disturbing trend has started at Yahoo. I have started to get bounce back messages when sending certain e-mails to folks with Yahoo (*.sbcglobal, *.yahoo, *.prodigy.net, etc..)
It's an error that I had never seen before and since I have worked in I.T. for nearly 30 years you would think that I had seen them all! Specifically, the error is:

554 UP Email? What the heck is that?? So, I have a couple Yahoo accounts. I sent the e-mail in question from them. I got the same bounce back message. So Yahoo is stopping messages sent from their own server? WTF?!
After a bunch of searches with Google and Microsoft it appears that the e-mail bounce back is being caused by the content of the message.
No, not in your typical anti canned meat way.
Rather, if it sees a word or phrase that it doesn't like the message gets bounced.
So how, you ask, is that different then in your typical anti canned meat way? Well, this is blocking it at the gateway; it's not letting the message in to the system where your whitelist lives. In other words, even if you whitelist the sender you still won't get their message because this blocking happens before your whitelist is processed.
So I cleaned up the message, put in plain text, thinking an embedded image or the like was triggering this. Guess what, the message was still rejected!
I finally made a PDF out of the message and sent it to the addressee. I didn't get a bounce back so hopefully they got the message. I will have to wait and see on this one.
"So what", you ask, "are the magick words that trigger a message to be blocked?"
I have no clue, really!
The message was a reply to a friend commenting on the state of life and such. Talking about her kids, family and summer plans.
How this constitutes a threat is beyond me.
So, folks, watch what you say on Yahoo, someone else is....

From my current project - Awakings; This is a snippet of dialog between Delineni and a pre-Kaswan Keith. It's actually kind of an in-joke at myself. Many of my characters have very weird names....
"About time you showed up young lady!
The voice came from a man standing several feet in front of us. The man was holding a wooden staff with a golden symbol on the top. The symbol looked like the one on Delineni's medallion. "I came as soon as Sam told me!"
Keith laughed:
"The hummingbird's name is Sam?!"
Delineni shook her head:
"Oh no, Sam is short for his real name."
Oh, what's his real name?
"Why, Samuel, of course!"
Keith sighed…

One of the stories I have been working on for a while is to the point that I have to do some research. What kind of research, you ask? Oh just some light topics such as the General Theory of Relativity, the Special Theory of Relativity, Equation(s) of state, etc…
Light reading, huh?
All this for a paragraph or two in the story, yikes! But I have to be sure; I have to be very sure that things are as I remember them to be when I first worked on this story in 1974. 30+ years can sometimes mess with the grey matter!
Well, I believe it is exactly as I remember so I am continuing on the path that has my alter ego, Taslasness, explaining some very metaphysical concepts using the physical concepts listed above. Hence Physics meets Magick, just as in did in 1974. I'm excited!
This isn't the first time I've researched things for a story. All my stories have some research involved.
When I was doing "Love - The Many Eyed Beast" I researched sword making for the first page in the story. Remember this was 1987; The Internet was a gleam in Doctor Cerf's eye! This research was done with books and vertical files. It took me months!
The Internet makes things much quicker. Of course you can't believe everything out there, but if you check your sources you should be good to go.
Well, I have some writing to do! I want to finish this ASAP so I can move on to "The Outsider Chronicles"
In the mean time I think I'll be dreaming of Einstein tonight!
Ewwwww...

I've resumed work on "Awakings" again. I'd like to finish this soon as I have several other projects to work on now. I'll tell you all more later, now sleep is calling me...

I found the video, made years ago by Stevie Nicks, that Typha's dress in the book is patterned after. Wait until 2:06. Too bad it's not black...

“Love – The Many Eyed Beast” was my first novella. Written in 1987-88 and published electronically on the BBS I ran at the time.
The story was a Cyberpunk tale involving a computer named “Arthur 5XZ1”. As the story is spun the reader is taken to the very near future where the first A.I. computer (Arthur) is being tested. As the story progresses the reader finds other elements in play - love, betrayal, sex, more sex, and revenge, bitter revenge.
The story’s characters are:
- James Phipps – A magazine writer, author, and a collector of rare swords.
- Dr. Kerri Weimenheimer – A.I. Computer Engineer
- Arthur 5XZ1 – A.I. Computer
- Karl Wedekind - Reporter
- Dr. Raymond Marcas – A.I. Computer Engineer
- Jeff Oates – Radio Station Engineer
The chapters were: - Chapter 1: Beginnings
- Chapter 2: In The Daylight Of Purple Sunsets
- Chapter 3: Night Songs
- Chapter 4: Computer Ears
- Chapter 5: Beasts
- Chapter 6: Endings Are Only Beginnings That Have Just Begun
So why haven’t you ever heard of this? Why isn’t it on the website? Two reasons: - The technology is hopelessly outdated. For example: I spend a portion of one chapter raving about Arthur’s specs: “I was more impressed by this computer, it was very impressive! She told me that it had a total memory of 1 Gb! (God, that's 1 billion bytes of memory, compared to the 256 thousand in most PCs!)…” Keep in mind that the story was written on a Commodore 64 computer with 64 Kb of memory. 1 Gb looked awful big then!
- The writing just sucks! I can’t believe that I was so damn naïve 20 years ago! It was also based a LOT on the movies “Electric Dreams”, “2001 – A Space Odyssey” and “The Lathe of Heaven”. The latter being a PBS special.
Still, it had its original moments and the ending was something never even thought of elsewhere. So lets call it a good first effort and move on. So, why even bring it up? I’m not really sure. After years of ignoring it for some reason I felt like it was time to remember it. So much so as I did some cover (clip)art for it the other day. I actually like it! So, what are the chances that I’ll re-write this? Well, I’ll never say never, but I will say almost never! ;-)

For the past few years I have been following the tale of "Pastel Defender Heliotrope" spun by the genius that is Jennifer Diane Reitz. The series ended last week with a satisfying conclusion. The gender-bender, futuristic tale encompassed so many emotions over the past few years, I doubt Jennifer left anything out! If you have never read it, why don't you start with page one. You won't be disappointed!

The migration of all things Kevin to the new web site continues with all the photographs that used to be on Yahoo/Flickr. It has taken me a week to do this, but it's finally done. To view the new photo site go to the main page of the web site and click on "Photographs" or JUST CLICK HERE.

The web site is back up and running on it's new server. You will notice that I have actually *GASP!* updated a few things, fixed the layout, and otherwise improved things.
More new stuff is still on the way. The best has only started...

Yikes! I'm still sorting through this myriad of changes for the web site, which as of this writing is still not up. For the technically inclined: The new DNS records have successfully propagated except for the MX records which are in limbo. Also they are still re-directing my IP instead of pointing it to the place it should go. I'm sure this will all be fixed within the next week. But YIKES!! Needless to say, the web site is down for a while. ;-)
